Intergenerational communication and labor participation of rehired retired university professors

Retirement is conceived as a transition to a stage of decline that demarcates the culmination of the professional career. The qualitative study aimed to analyze perceptions about intergenerational communication and labor participation of retired teachers rehired at the Central University “Marta Abreu” of Las Villas. Five retired teachers, 20 students, 10 teachers and 2 non-teaching workers participated. The in-depth interview and the questionnaire were used as instruments. The perceptions about intergenerational communication manifested in the study showed, from the subjective point of view, potential to become favorable mediators for the establishment of harmonious intergenerational relationships, based mainly on respect for the experience and wisdom attributed to the elderly. The labor participation of rehired retired teachers is mainly perceived as a continuum with blurred boundaries between retirement and rehire.
