The accused in liberal times: an overview to Santiago cathedral chapter

Abstract

This article analyze the ways of participation of the members of the Santiago cathedral chapter during the liberal insurrection led by General Manuel Lorenzo and the specificities of the judicial proceedings against them. The complex web of connections that have reached these church in the urban environment are also examined. On the other hand, it explains how internal divisions could be observed within this institution in a constant search for its members to gain hegemony and regional benefits. This is a valid analytical precedent to further explain the state of the historiographical treatment on this subject in the European, Latin American and Cuban context is a pretext. The main results of this contribution point to highlight the importance that the cathedral chapters came to have in regional environments, whether in political, economic or cultural aspects.
