Tributes from the jewish community to José Martí

Abstract

The research examines the relationship between José Martí and Jewish personalities and communities, as well as the tributes they paid to him after his death, especially on the centenary of his birth. A descriptive methodology with a chronological and qualitative approach was applied, supported by methods such as analysis-synthesis, historical-logical, and documentary review, which allowed for the triangulation of information and the presentation of a coherent vision of the subject. The results show that, although it is a scarcely addressed aspect in historiography, Martí’s work was universally received by the Jewish community, which identified it as a contribution to the construction of a more just world without discrimination based on race or creed. Among the most significant tributes are the planting of a forest in Israel bearing his name, four decades before the first Martí forest in Cuba, and the publication in Havana of a literary edition dedicated to Martí in 1953. These actions, together with the work of Jewish leaders and writers, reflect the deep admiration and devotion toward the Master, consolidating his legacy as the most universal of Cubans and reaffirming the relevance of his ideas in multicultural contexts.
