Labor Training and Social Transformation: Pre-University Youth in Cuba (1900–2024)

This study examines the historical evolution of pre-university labor training in Cuba between 1900 and 2024, highlighting its social impact. Using a qualitative approach with a historical-critical design and a systematic review of primary and secondary sources, a three-phase categorical content analysis was applied. The results identify five historical stages, each marked by specific tensions between formative and productive objectives. Labor training has had an ambivalent social effect: it has driven upward social mobility and contributed to generational identity formation, but it has also reproduced territorial, social origin, and gender inequalities. The research concludes that the contemporary challenge is not to abandon the principle of “study and work,” but to design policies that explicitly manage its social tensions and correct its differential impacts. The proposed matrix of formative-productive tensions constitutes an original theoretical contribution.
