José Martí and the petroleum industry

The article analyzes José Martí’s journalistic and epistolary writings related to the emerging oil industry, contextualizing his thought within the framework of the Second Industrial Revolution and the monopolistic consolidation of capitalism. Historical-logical, inductive-deductive, and phenomenological methods are applied to chronologically organize his chronicles on oil in the United States, Mexico, Chile, and regions of the Russian Empire, as well as his correspondence on the management of a refinery. The results highlight Martí as an exceptional witness to the early rise of oil, a critic of capital concentration, and a disseminator of scientific advances to Latin America, while also demonstrating his intellectual and organizational capacity in industrial projects. It is concluded that his vision, beyond the technical dimension, is inscribed in an ethic of service to Cuba’s freedom, offering a comprehensive reading of his political, scientific, and humanistic thought.
