Psychological symptoms present in older adults post-Chikungunya

During the health crisis caused by Chikungunya fever in Cuba between February and April 2025, an observational study was conducted among older adults treated at the Josué País García Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba. The sample, composed of patients with an average age of 70 years and predominantly male, allowed the identification of the main psychological symptoms associated with the infection. Results revealed that depression and anxiety were the most frequent manifestations, highlighting the emotional impact of the disease on this vulnerable group. A particularly significant finding was that nearly 80% of participants presented suicidal risk, linked to functional deterioration and the perception of loss of autonomy. This constitutes a warning sign that requires priority attention in clinical evaluation and intervention strategies. Depression, anxiety, and suicidal risk must therefore be considered central components in the comprehensive care of older adults affected by Chikungunya, integrating psychological support and specialized follow-up.
