Socialist realism in Cuba: main trends during the 1970s

The symbolic conformation of the Cuban revolution through the use of ideological resources such as art, brought with it the discussion about how revolutionary artistic production should be oriented from its beginnings. The approach to the USSR and the import of mechanisms of social organization from it, placed socialist realism, as a method of official creation, in the discussion on art. The legalization of the process of institutionalization during the 1970s involved the analysis of the general form of the cultural policy of the revolution. This article aims to explain in general terms how the issue of socialist realism in Cuba was tackled by Cuban intellectuals in the 1970s. To this end, the authors organize themselves into trends, define the main thematic lines, and explain the elements common and the main differences between trends.
