Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus, known in English as HIV, is a pathological agent that affects the immunological system and the nervous system in the human population. This peculiarity implies neuropsychological disruption in many cognitive functions, as executive functions, attention and memory. This neuropsychological deficits in HIV, affect too, the social, familiar and laborer life in patients. In this article, the authors doing a review about principal neuropsychological alterations in HIV, the most important risk factors of cognitive disruption, the influence of antiretroviral therapy in cognitive function, possibilities of neuropsychological restoration, and the situation in Colombia about HIV and infected patients.
