Guillermo Fernández Mascaró: Lights and Shadows of a Historical Trajectory

The article analyzes the life of Guillermo Fernández Mascaró, a physician, soldier, educator, politician, and diplomat who took part in important events of Cuban history between the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. It emphasizes the difference between a person’s historical participation and their later presence in collective memory, considering processes of selection, transmission, and forgetting. The study reviews key stages of his trajectory: his role in the War of Independence and his relationship with Antonio Maceo, his professional and political activity during the Republic, his position under Gerardo Machado’s government, the debated link with the assassination of Julio Antonio Mella, his participation in tributes to José Martí, and his intellectual work. Historiographical, documentary, journalistic, and testimonial sources reveal diverse and sometimes contradictory views of his actions. The article concludes that his limited presence in later historiography is not only due to deliberate erasure but also to institutional, political, generational, and memorial factors.
