Immigrants from Cuba in Jamaica (1869-1898)

Abstract

When countries are involved in wars there are strong exoduses of people. The causes are varied: some go out in search of peaceful places for fear of consequences, others trying to save their economies, while third parties by their political positions are forced to leave their places of origin, not for reprisals, but in search of places where to recompose the forces for a new attempt in pursuit of reaching the objectives that they pursue. During the thirty years of war against Spanish colonialism in Cuba, important waves of people headed to different points of the Latin American and Caribbean geography emerged. One of the chosen places was Jamaica, a country that due to its proximity allowed a rapid arrival to the national territory. The present work aims to demonstrate the presence of immigrants from Cuba in Jamaica between the years 1869 and 1898.
