Road to 50 years of the first graduation of Mathematics at the Universidad de Oriente: notes for a history

Abstract

In the present work an approximation is made, as a rescue, to the history of the Mathematics Career at the Universidad de Oriente from its foundation to the present times. In the same one the main historical antecedents of this fact are collected, which are treated through the different historical periods that the nation has lived. In this approach, emphasis is placed on the most relevant events and personalities of each stage, and the contribution they made at the beginning of higher studies in Mathematics in Santiago de Cuba. Finally, these studies are addressed until they reach their establishment as an independent academic entity in the second university in the country, an issue that is divided into three moments: foundation, development and more contemporary results. For the writing of this essay, we had the special motivation of the already very close 50th anniversary of the first graduation of the Mathematics Career in our house of higher studies, and the contribution of this to the historical heritage of the eastern septuagenarian Alma Mater.
