Adaptive governance and social participation in the face of climate change. A theoretical perspective

Abstract

Climate change significantly affects the socioeconomic and environmental dynamics of coastal zones. These problems highlight the need to implement integrated management actions that promote participatory and adaptive governance in the face of new challenges. The main objective of this paper is to provide an essential theoretical basis for the contributions of social participation and adaptive governance from the practice of ICZM in the face of current and future challenges in the context of climate change. Our methodological framework is based on the conceptions of ICZM as a continuous, dynamic and adaptive process, which allows the compatibility of socio-environmental interests in the coastal zone. The main result of this article is to provide a theoretically based tool on the processes of social participation and adaptive governance, from an integrated management perspective.
