The Teaching of Reverse Translation: a Need in the English Language Major at Universidad de Oriente

Abstract

The training of translators is one of the objectives of the English Language Major at Universidad de Oriente. The syllabus design makes possible the development of skills in direct translation (from the foreign language into the mother tongue). However, the training in reverse translation (from the mother tongue into the foreign language), although essential component of the students’ future task as translators, is not an objective of the syllabus. This research work is aimed at improving the teaching learning process of translation by proposing an elective course for the training in reverse translation, filling the gap between the academic education and the translators’ professional work.
